10 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Makeup Artist

Congratulations on your engagement! Now that you have your wedding date decided on it’s time to get things organised. You might think that makeup and hairstyling planning comes at a later stage, however, let me reassure you that this is the crucial part of the whole wedding. At Turning Heads Makeup & Hairstyling spaces fill up well in advance. Hence, conduct extensive research and choose the right person who will be there for you on the day to create the perfect look for you. When looking for a makeup artist consider asking the following questions:

1. Do you do hairstyling as well?

Would not that be so convenient if you hired one person who would take care of your makeup and hair? Indeed, it would. However, make sure to clarify if your stylist has an assistant or would it be possible to get everything done for you, your bridesmaids, mother of the groom and mother of the bride (oh and maybe the flower girls too?) within only a few hours. If a person you are hiring works alone and the number of people needing services on the day is too many, then you have two options: get up at 5 am to start getting ready or talk to you makeup artists and seek some suggestions on the best hairdressers out there.

2. Do you work on location or do I have to travel to you on the day?⁣

Ideally, you want that person to travel to you. Trust me, I have been a bride myself, and I know that even when you have every tiny detail thought through, there is still space for a little nerve-wracking thought in your head. Eliminate all unnecessary stress and choose a suitable location to get ready at, whether it’s a luxury hotel, wedding venue or your own home.

3. Will you do a trial run with me? Would that include hairstyling too?⁣

Definitely, do a trial to see if you get along with your stylist and if your ideas and values match. You have to look your best and you have to trust that person too. No surprises on the day. Make sure everything is written down.

4. Do you want to see photos of hair and makeup looks I like?⁣

You have to have some idea of how you want your makeup and hair done. The best places to search for inspiration are Pinterest, Instagram and magazines. When you do a trial, let your stylist know what look you are after.

5. Can you help me choose hairstyling and makeup to match with my dress and accessories?

Your inspiration might still be busy with choosing table runs and flower walls together. In this case, get your makeup artist and hair stylist to help you choose. Keep in mind that when your dress and overall look fit into the general concept of the wedding, you get fantastic photos and the esthetics.

6. If I change my mind about my bridal beauty look, do I have to book another trial?

It’s important to check the availability of the person you are going to hire to work on your bridal look, just in case if you need any last-minute advice or a trial run.

7. Should I bring my accessories and veil to the trial? What do we do on the trial if I don’t have those yet?

It’s best to have a trial 6 to 8 weeks prior to your wedding day. It might be the case of not having your veil and all accessories arrive by that time. However, if you do have them it is a great idea to bring them for the trial. This is when you can discuss how high or low you want your veil placed. If there are any hair pieces, your hair stylist will have time to think through how to put and secure them correctly.

8. Do you provide all the products or do I have to supply something?

Top rated beauty service providers usually supply everything. It’s not a bad idea to have your own lipstick or lipgloss to top it up.

9. Are you familiar with my skin type or hair type?

A great question to ask, especially if your skin is sensitive or you have any allergies.

10. What happens if there is an emergency and you cannot be there on the day?

This is, perhaps, one of the most important questions but it’s asked by about 10% of clients. You have to have a Plan B. Think about all your bridesmaids, MOB and MOG and flower girls. Would you manage with a last-minute cancellation? Nope.
